With ambitions to further reduce the footprint of tomorrow’s windows, the NorDan Group is taking an active ownership stake in the new glass technology company Hybridized.
NorDan has a long tradition of innovation and sustainability thinking and is not afraid to challenge existing solutions. With the investment in Hybridized, the main goal is to reduce the carbon footprint from glass – the largest single climate factor in wooden windows and doors. As a result of the investment, NorDan CEO Dag Kroslid will join Hybridized’s board of directors.
Improving energy efficiency in windows comes at a climate cost. Large window surfaces in modern buildings often require triple glazing, but the total weight, material consumption, and light transmission are challenging.
Within such products, the insulating glass unit (IGU) accounts for more than 50 percent of a window’s total global warming potential (GWP), measured in kilograms of CO₂ equivalents.
Hybridized has developed a production technology that replaces the middle pane in triple glazing with an ultra-thin, flexible material. This reduces weight, lowers glass consumption, and cuts the GWP of a triple-glazed IGU by around 30 percent – while also improving light transmission. The hybrid glass solution also creates new opportunities for integrating “smart” technologies with lower cost and reduced material use.
Atle Geving, Managing Director of Hybridized:
“We have a unique solution to a problem that will only become more important in the future: doing more with less. With significant industrial collaboration with suppliers such as LiSEC and Edgetech, as well as interest from customers, we look forward to establishing production. Our solution can help reduce buildings’ energy consumption, while at the same time reducing weight and material use through our hybrid insulating glass.”
Dag Kroslid, CEO of NorDan Group:
“At NorDan, we are actively involved in discovering, supporting, and investing in solutions that can improve product sustainability. Innovative glass technology is critical for reducing the carbon footprint of the windows we produce. Through cooperation with suppliers and customers, we can accelerate the reduction of emissions. We look forward to innovating, developing, and creating change together with Hybridized.”
The investment in Hybridized is part of a larger series of initiatives at NorDan. Another example is the recently launched use of ORAE® glass from Saint-Gobain.
